What Avatar: The Last Airbender is about

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an animated series that ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008, over three seasons. In its world, some people can "bend" water, earth, fire, or air. Aang, the Avatar, is the only one who can learn all four, and he sets out with his friends to end a war started by the Fire Nation.

The story continues in two newer versions: a live-action series on Netflix (season 1 in February 2024, season 2 on June 25, 2026) and the animated film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, set years after the show.

The habit kids may copy: getting "bigger" when angry

In the 2026 film, according to the BBFC, two characters fight while transformed into powerful, angry giants with glowing eyes and distorted voices. Big feelings turn into big power, and the power takes over.

Try tonight: control your element

Aang has to learn to control his power before he uses it. Play "bender" with your child: big arm moves, then freeze. Ask: "Is the feeling in charge, or are you?" In our program, this is the lesson "The Dragon Inside": noticing anger before it takes over.
