Elio age rating: what's in it
Short answer: It's PG in the US and the UK, and 6 in Germany.
- US (MPA): PG, for some action/peril and thematic elements.
- UK (BBFC): PG, for mild threat, scary scenes, and violence.
- Germany (FSK): 6.
The BBFC describes occasional mild violence (laser blasts, a slapstick fist fight), a scene where a character moves in an unnatural way to frighten someone, a boy chased through the woods by older bullies, menacing alien warriors, a creature with a lamprey-like mouth, an alien skeleton, and a character who cuts off his own thumb and replaces it painlessly. Grief and loneliness are treated gently. Common Sense Media adds a prank by campers who scare Elio.

Short answer: The MPA lists peril, and the BBFC lists scary scenes.
The BBFC says the threat is broken up by comedy and resolved reassuringly. Its examples include menacing alien warriors, a lamprey-mouthed creature, and a character moving in an unsettling way to frighten someone.
The habit kids may copy: the scary prank
Common Sense Media describes a prank in which campers scare Elio. It's fun for the pranksters, not for him.
