What is The Fairly OddParents?

Short answer: A Nickelodeon cartoon about a 10-year-old boy whose fairy godparents grant his wishes.

Created by Butch Hartman, it ran on Nickelodeon from 2001 to 2017: 10 seasons and 172 episodes. Timmy Turner's parents ignore him and his babysitter Vicky mistreats him, so fairies Cosmo and Wanda grant his wishes, which usually backfire. A live-action spinoff, Fairly Odder, came to Paramount+ in 2022, and the animated sequel A New Wish, about 10-year-old Hazel, premiered on Nickelodeon on May 20, 2024.

The Fairly OddParents age rating: what's in it

Short answer: TV-Y7 in the US and U in the UK.

  • UK (BBFC): U; original: mild slapstick violence; A New Wish: rude humor, bullying, dangerous behavior, violence.
  • Common Sense Media: 6+ for the original.

Common Sense Media lists cartoon roughhousing and physical comedy, occasional crude language ("nothing more serious than 'butt ugly'"), and some fleeting innuendo. It notes that Timmy's wishes gone wrong often teach him a lesson about respecting others.

The habit kids may copy: wish it away

Timmy fixes problems by wishing, and each wish creates a new problem he didn't think about.

Try tonight: one wish, then wait

Ask your child for one wish for something they want right now. Write it on a note and put it on the fridge. Say: "Let's check it again on Saturday and see if you still want it." In our program, this is the lesson "Boss of My Want": "I want it now," and learning to wait.
