Instagram age limit: what parents should know

Instagram age limit: Instagram's Help Center says users must be at least 13, and Apple's App Store rates the app 13+, citing infrequent profanity, mature themes, alcohol and drug references, sexual content, and weapons. Since 2024, teens are placed in Teen Accounts, which are private by default and limit messages to people they follow or are connected to. What is Instagram?

Short answer: A social network for photos, short videos (Reels), Stories, and direct messages, owned by Meta Platforms.

Users follow accounts, post, comment, go Live, and message each other. Meta also owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

Instagram age limit: the facts

Short answer: The minimum age is 13, and the App Store rates it 13+.

  • Minimum age: 13, per Instagram's Help Center; some places, such as South Korea, Spain, and Quebec, differ.
  • App Store: 13+, with infrequent profanity, mature or suggestive themes, alcohol and drug references, sexual content or nudity, and weapons.
  • Australia: since December 10, 2025, Instagram is covered by the national under-16 minimum age.
  • Purchases: Meta Verified ($14.99) and badges for Live videos ($0.99–$4.99).

Is Instagram safe for kids? Teen Accounts

Short answer: Instagram is rated 13+; for teens, Meta says Teen Accounts turn on stricter defaults.

  • Accounts are private by default; messages only from people the teen follows or is connected to.
  • The most restrictive sensitive-content setting; a 60-minute daily reminder; sleep mode from 10pm to 7am.
  • Under-16s need a parent's approval to loosen any default and can't go Live without it.
  • With supervision, parents can see who a teen messaged in the last 7 days (not the messages), set daily limits, and block hours.

In October 2025, Meta also announced a PG-13 content default for teens, according to AP.

Has Instagram been sued?

Short answer: Yes; Meta disputes the claims.

In August 2026, Meta and 51 attorneys general announced a settlement of the 2023 multistate lawsuit over child safety. Meta would pay up to about $17 billion over 10 years and add defaults for under-18s. Legal-news outlets (MLex, Mealey's) report a federal judge entered the consent judgment on August 26; Meta admits no liability, and as of October 2026 we couldn't confirm when the changes take effect.

In New Mexico, a jury ruled against Meta in March 2026; in August, a judge ordered a further $567 million for a youth-harm abatement fund; Meta says it will appeal. An LA jury found Meta negligent in app design; Meta and Google appealed in July.

The habit kids may copy: counting likes

On Instagram, a post comes with a number: how many people liked it. Kids notice when grown-ups check that number.

Try tonight: the vote that counts

Ask your child to draw one thing they like, then hang it on the fridge. No ratings, no hearts. Ask: "Do you like it? That's the vote that counts." In our program, this is the lesson "Enough": noticing what's already here.
