Overwatch 2 age rating: what parents of kids 4–7 should know

Overwatch 2 age rating: the ESRB rates it T (Teen, 13 and up) for blood, mild language, use of tobacco, and violence, and lists in-game purchases that include random items. PEGI raised it to 16 in Europe and the UK after its June 2026 rule change on paid random items. In February 2026, Blizzard dropped the "2" and the game is now called Overwatch. What is Overwatch 2?

Short answer: An online team shooter where players pick heroes with special powers, now called simply Overwatch.

The ESRB says players choose from 36 characters that use pistols, machine guns, futuristic blasters, swords, and explosives in team battles. Blizzard renamed Overwatch 2 back to Overwatch with a new Season 1 on February 10, 2026, according to Shacknews.

Overwatch 2 age rating: what's in it

Short answer: It's rated for teens in the US and 16 and up in Europe.

  • US & Canada (ESRB): T. The ESRB describes frequent gunfire and explosions, large blood-splatter effects from some weapons, a cowboy character often smoking, and the word "bastard."
  • Europe & UK (PEGI): 16. PEGI says it updated the rating after its June 2026 criteria change because the game includes paid random items; it also lists moderate violence and the word "bloody."
  • Common Sense Media: 13+ (for Overwatch 2).

What did Belgium decide about Overwatch loot boxes?

Short answer: Belgium's Gaming Commission found in April 2018 that Overwatch loot boxes were games of chance under its gambling law, and Blizzard disabled paid loot boxes for Belgian players in August 2018.

The finding also covered FIFA 18 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and the justice minister demanded the loot boxes be removed. In August 2018, Blizzard disabled paid loot boxes for Belgian players, saying it disagreed but would comply, PC Gamer reported. Today the ESRB still lists "In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)," and PEGI says some cosmetic items are randomized.

The habit kids may copy: picking the strongest hero

Team shooters reward picking the "best" hero. Kids may argue over who gets to be the strongest character in pretend play.

Try tonight: everybody's power

Name a family superhero team: each person gets one real power, like "great hugger" or "fast tidier." Ask: "What's your power, and how does it help the team?" In our program, this is the lesson "Fair Play": a game is fun only when it's fun for everyone.
