What Peppa Pig is

Peppa Pig is a British animated series about a little pig, her brother George, and their parents. Episodes are about 5 minutes long. It was created by Neville Astley and Mark Baker, first aired in the UK in 2004, and has been owned by Hasbro since 2019. In the US, it airs on Nick Jr.

Is Peppa Pig bad for kids? The criticism

Short answer: It's rated for all children, and the criticism is about manners, not violence or scary content.

  • Teasing and rudeness: Common Sense Media notes that Peppa can be insensitive toward her family, with occasional jokes about Daddy Pig's weight and appearance.
  • Safety scenes: after viewer complaints, the producers added seatbelts and bike helmets to early episodes.
  • Spiders: Australia's ABC removed the "Mister Skinnylegs" episode from its online service after a complaint that Daddy Pig tells Peppa spiders can't hurt you.

The "Peppa effect"

Since 2019, American parents have reported children using British words such as "mummy" and copying a British accent after watching Peppa. These reports are anecdotal. Linguists quoted in the coverage, including NYU's Susannah Levi, say children learn their accent from the people around them, though they may copy how unfamiliar words are pronounced.

The habit kids may copy: laughing at someone

In many episodes, the family laughs at Daddy Pig: his tummy, his mistakes. He laughs too. Some kids copy the joke on someone who isn't laughing.

Try tonight: "Funny for him too?"

When someone gets laughed at, ask: "Was that funny for him too?" If not, say sorry and try a different joke. In our program, this is the lesson "Stepping In": noticing when someone's left out or hurt.

What the research says

There's no research showing Peppa Pig harms children. The World Health Organization recommends no more than 1 hour of sedentary screen time a day for children ages 2 to 4, and says less is better (WHO, 2019). A 2022 meta-analysis of 87 studies with about 159,000 children ages 12 and under found that more screen time was linked to slightly more behavior problems; the link was small and doesn't show cause and effect. More in screen time and child development.
