What is Polly Pocket?

Short answer: Tiny dolls that live inside pocket-size compact playsets.

Bluebird Toys of England sold the first Polly Pocket compacts in 1989, and Mattel bought Bluebird and the brand in 1998, according to Wikipedia. Mattel then made the dolls bigger; the line wasn't sold in the US from 2012 to 2018. Today's compacts come back to the tiny size and include tie-ins with Bluey, Gabby's Dollhouse, KPop Demon Hunters, and collector sets like Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Polly Pocket magnet recalls

Short answer: Yes, millions of magnetic Polly Pocket sets were recalled in 2006 and 2007.

In November 2006, Mattel and the CPSC recalled about 2.4 million play sets in the US because tiny magnets in dolls and accessories could fall out. The CPSC said children who swallowed more than one magnet suffered intestinal perforations that needed surgery. In August 2007, after more than 400 more reports, the recall grew to about 7.3 million sets. Sets made after November 1, 2006, weren't included. We found no 1998 recall.

Vintage Polly Pocket resale

Short answer: One 1990s set was reported to sell for far above its original price.

Romper reported in 2018, citing The Sun, that a mint, boxed set with 1996 editions sold for £1,421.29 on UK eBay. Wikipedia notes that the original Bluebird sets are now collectibles.

The habit kids may copy: the lost shoe

Polly Pocket pieces are tiny, and they travel. One lost shoe can stop the whole game.

Try tonight: a home for every piece

Pick one box or the compact itself as the home for all the tiny pieces. Make one rule together: "When I'm done, every piece goes home." Check it before bed. In our program, this is the lesson "My Fort": the rules I keep.
