What is a Tamagotchi?

Short answer: A small handheld digital pet made by Bandai.

Kids feed it, clean up after it, and play with it, and it grows and changes over time. Today's main models are the Original Tamagotchi, Tamagotchi Paradise, which came out in the US on August 1, 2025, according to Siliconera, and Tamagotchi Uni, which uses Wi-Fi.

Tamagotchi age: what Bandai says

Short answer: 6+ for Paradise, 8+ for the Original.

  • Tamagotchi Paradise: Age Recommendation 6+, $44.99, two AAA batteries sold separately.
  • Original Tamagotchi: Age Recommendation 8+, $19.99, one CR2032 coin battery included (Bandai says it's for testing only).
  • Tamagotchi Uni: connects to Wi-Fi; Bandai's site says its security support period ran until July 13, 2026, and that Wi-Fi services may be suspended without notice.

We didn't find a small-parts warning on Bandai's pages. Some retail listings carry a coin-battery warning; we couldn't confirm the wording on Bandai's own packaging.

Can a Tamagotchi die?

Short answer: Yes, the character can die. In May 2026, Bandai posted a notice about a special "peaceful death" scene in Tamagotchi Paradise for characters that live past 30 Tamagotchi years. Paradise devices can also link up to visit, play, and exchange gifts, according to Bandai.

The habit kids may copy: the beep that can't wait

A Tamagotchi beeps when it's hungry, dirty, or bored, and it gets worse when no one comes.

Try tonight: is it up to me?

When the pet beeps during dinner, ask together: "Is this up to me right now, or can it wait five minutes?" Then check it after dinner. In our program, this is the lesson "Two Baskets": what's up to me, and what isn't.
