WhatsApp age limit and accounts for under-13s
Short answer: The age limit is 13, but parents can now set up a managed account for younger kids where available.
According to TechCrunch, parent-managed accounts launched on March 11, 2026, starting in select regions. They allow messaging and calling only: no ads, Meta AI, Channels, or Status. A parent links the account by scanning a QR code, sets a 6-digit PIN, and gets alerts when the child adds, blocks, or reports a contact. Images from unknown contacts are blurred. Chats stay end-to-end encrypted; we couldn't confirm whether parents can read them.
The habit kids may copy: checking at every ping
Group chats buzz all day. Kids notice when a grown-up picks up the phone at every sound, even in the middle of a conversation.
Try tonight: "It can wait"
At dinner, put your phone face down where your child can see it. When it buzzes, say out loud: "It can wait. I'm with you." Then let your child choose the next phone-free time: bath, story, or breakfast. In our program, this is the lesson "The Pause Button": stop, breathe, choose.
What the research says
A 2022 meta-analysis of 87 studies with about 159,000 children ages 12 and under found that more screen time was linked to slightly more behavior problems; the link was small and doesn't show cause and effect. More in screen time and child development.
