What's in it

Oatly Original lists an oat base (water, oats) and, at 2% or less, low erucic acid rapeseed oil, dipotassium phosphate, calcium carbonate, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, dicalcium phosphate, riboflavin, and vitamins A, D2, and B12. Per cup (240 mL): 120 calories, 5 g of fat, 16 g of carbohydrates, 2 g of fiber, 7 g of total sugars (all 7 g added), 3 g of protein, 100 mg of sodium, and 350 mg of calcium. Oatly says no sweetener such as cane sugar is added; the sugar comes from its enzyme process. Oats are not one of the FDA's nine major allergens.

Oat milk vs cow's milk: what's different?

Per cup, label and USDA facts: Oatly Original has 3 g of protein and 350 mg of calcium; Silk Original Oatmilk has 1 g of protein and 470 mg of calcium; whole cow's milk (USDA FDC 171265) has about 7.7 g of protein, 276 mg of calcium, and 0 g of added sugar (no sweetener in ingredients; inferred). The oat milks are fortified with calcium and vitamin D. Cow's milk contains milk, one of the FDA's nine major allergens.

For kids 4–8

The AAP's page on drinks for children 5 and younger says most plant-based milks are not nutritionally equivalent to cow's milk and may lack protein, vitamin D, and calcium, and that soy milk is the plant milk it calls an acceptable alternative. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030 recommend no added sugar for kids 5–10 and no more than 10 g per meal; one cup of Oatly Original has 7 g. For a child with a milk allergy or intolerance, a pediatrician or dietitian can help choose a drink.

Swaps and pairings

Oatly Original and Silk Original Oatmilk each list 7 g of added sugar per cup with no sugar in the ingredient list, so the "Includes Xg Added Sugars" line is the place to check. Pairing oat milk with foods that bring protein, such as eggs, yogurt, or beans, makes up for the 3 g per cup. Silk Original Oatmilk lists gellan gum, locust bean gum, and natural flavor, so brands differ in ingredients.
