What does "..." mean in a text? The ellipsis, explained for parents
What does "..." mean in a text? The three dots are an ellipsis. Merriam-Webster defines it as a mark showing that something was left out, or a pause. In writing, it shows a speaker pausing or trailing off. In texts, it can read as hesitation or an unfinished thought, and dictionaries give it no single texting meaning, so the same dots can read differently to a parent and a child.

What does "..." mean?
Short answer: A pause, or a thought left unfinished.
- "Ok..." can read as hesitant or unconvinced, unlike "ok" or "ok!"
- "..." on its own can read as "I don't know what to say."
- "Well..." leaves the rest unsaid.
What dictionaries say
Merriam-Webster defines an ellipsis as "marks or a mark (such as …) indicating an omission (as of words) or a pause." Its grammar guide says the dots show either that something was cut from a quotation or that "a speaker or writer has paused or trailed off." It also notes they're used in informal personal writing in place of periods. We couldn't confirm a separate texting meaning in any major dictionary.
Why the same dots can read differently
Merriam-Webster describes two informal uses: a casual break between thoughts, in place of a period, and a pause or trailing off. A reader can take the same "..." either way, and no dictionary says which one is meant in a text.
Is "..." rude?
Short answer: Not by itself. It depends on who sends it and how the other person reads it.
