What Avatar: Fire and Ash is about

Avatar: Fire and Ash rating: what's in the movie

Short answer:

  • US (MPA): PG-13, parents strongly cautioned; some material may be inappropriate under 13.
  • UK (BBFC): 12A, under 12s only with an adult.
  • Germany (FSK): 12, ages 6 to 11 only with a parent.

The UK's BBFC describes extended battles with guns, knives, bows, and spears, and large creatures attacking people. Children are chased and captured, knives are held to throats, and captured characters are beaten. A boy repeatedly struggles to breathe. There's infrequent use of the f-word, a couple implied to have had sex, a character made to take a hallucinogenic substance, verbal sexual harassment, and brief references to suicide.

New Zealand's Classification Office adds that many characters die, including by falling, arrows, and burning.

The habit kids may copy: hit back

The film is about a cycle of revenge: one side attacks, the other strikes back. Young kids copy the simple version: "He hit me, so I hit him."

Try tonight: stop the dragon first

Practice once, when everyone's calm: if someone hurts you, "Three breaths, then tell a grown-up." In our program, this is the lesson "The Dragon Inside": noticing anger before it takes over.
