What is Cut the Rope?

Short answer: A puzzle game in which you cut ropes so a piece of candy swings and falls into the mouth of Om Nom, a little green monster.

ZeptoLab released it in 2010. Sequels include Cut the Rope: Experiments (2011) and Cut the Rope 2 (2013). Newer titles on the App Store include Cut the Rope Daily (2023) and Cut the Rope 3 on Apple Arcade (2023); all are rated 4+.

Cut the Rope age rating: what's in it

Short answer: 4+ on the App Store and Everyone on Google Play; the Nintendo versions are E from the ESRB.

  • ESRB: E, no descriptors, for the Nintendo DSi and 3DS versions. For Triple Treat, the ESRB describes "progressively harder physics-based puzzles" with ropes and bubbles.
  • App Store: 4+, no descriptors.
  • Google Play: Everyone, no descriptors.
  • Common Sense Media: 7+. It lists violence and scariness, bad language, and drinking as not present.

Ads and purchases

The phone games are free and show ads. Cut the Rope sells ad removal for $0.99, packs of solutions and magnets, and extra seasons of levels, with offers up to $9.99. Cut the Rope 2 sells a $4.99 Premium Membership and coin piles from $1.99 to $39.99. Neither store lists chat for these games; Cut the Rope 2 sells "Om Nom's Party Box," and we couldn't confirm whether its contents are random. We found no government action naming Cut the Rope or ZeptoLab.

The habit kids may copy: cut and see

Each level has several ropes, and the order of cuts decides where the candy goes. A wrong cut means starting the level again.

Try tonight: another way to Om Nom

Put a toy "monster" on the floor and a ball across the room. Your child tries to get the ball to the monster without carrying it. When one way fails, say: "That way didn't work. What's another way?" In our program, this is the lesson "Plan B": if one way doesn't work, try another.
