What is Hay Day?

Short answer: A free farming game for phones and tablets, made by Supercell, the studio behind Clash of Clans.

Players plant crops, feed animals, make goods like bread and cakes, and fill orders by truck or boat. They can trade with other players and join a neighborhood of up to 30 players to help each other.

Hay Day age rating: what's in it

Short answer: It's 9+ on the App Store, Everyone on Google Play, and 13+ at Common Sense Media.

  • App Store: 9+, with loot boxes, advertising, and messaging and chat; Apple notes in-app parental controls and age checks.
  • Google Play: Everyone, with Users Interact and in-game purchases that include random items.
  • Common Sense Media: 13+; its review noted that the terms then required users to be 13.
  • Supercell's current terms: users under the age of majority need a legal guardian to agree.

Neighborhoods, chat, and purchases

Short answer: Neighborhoods have chat, and some items are sold for real money, including random ones.

The App Store lists messaging and chat; Google Play says users interact. Hay Day's own App Store description says some items "can also be purchased for real money (including random items)" and suggests turning off in-app purchases in device settings. Diamonds cost $1.99 to $39.99, and the Farm Pass $4.99.

The habit kids may copy: always something more to build

There's always one more field, machine, or decoration to add. Kids who watch can pick up the idea that the farm is never quite finished.

Try tonight: the look-around

Walk through one room together and count what's already there that your child likes. Say: "Look what we already have." In our program, this is the lesson "Enough": noticing what's already here.

Who makes it: Supercell. See what its other titles teach in the Kids' Media Publisher Index.
