Is Kinetic Sand safe? What parents of kids 4–7 should know

Is Kinetic Sand safe? Spin Master's Kinetic Sand is labeled for ages 3 and up, and its packaging, as shown on Target, warns of a choking hazard from small parts for children under 3. Poison Control says it's about 98% sand and 2% dimethicone, a silicone; sand isn't poisonous when swallowed and dimethicone is minimally toxic, but a large amount can cause constipation and, in severe cases, a blockage. We found no CPSC recall of Kinetic Sand. A November 2025 recall of coloured sands in Australia over asbestos covered other brands, and Spin Master says Kinetic Sand isn't subject to any recall.

What is Kinetic Sand?

Short answer: Play sand that sticks to itself, so kids can mold, slice, and squeeze it without water.

Poison Control describes it as about 98% ultra-fine sand mixed with 2% dimethicone, a silicone compound also used in some diaper rash creams. Spin Master sells it in tubs, bags, and play sets; a 3-lb bag of Beach Sand costs $12.99 at Target.

Is Kinetic Sand safe? What the label and Poison Control say

Short answer: It's labeled 3+, with a small-parts warning, and Poison Control calls its ingredients low in toxicity.

  • Age: 3 years and up (Target listing).
  • Warning: "choking hazard - small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs."
  • If eaten: Poison Control says a small amount should pass; larger amounts can cause constipation and, in severe cases, a blockage. Warning signs include a swollen belly, vomiting, and no bowel movements. Its number is 1-800-222-1222.

Was Kinetic Sand recalled?

Short answer: We found no recall of Kinetic Sand in the CPSC database or Health Canada's recall listings as of October 2026.

In November 2025, Australia's consumer regulator, the ACCC, published recalls of some imported coloured and decorative sands after tests found tremolite asbestos, WA Health reported; Kinetic Sand wasn't named. In a message to retailers, Spin Master said Kinetic Sand "is not subject to any recall." We couldn't confirm reports of a 2023 Kinetic Sand recall.

The habit kids may copy: tasting the sand

Kinetic Sand looks like wet beach sand and comes in bright colors, and small children explore by putting things in their mouths.

Try tonight: sand stays on the tray

Before you open the tub, agree on two rules together: the sand stays on the tray, and it stays out of mouths. Let your child say them back: "Sand on the tray, not in my mouth." In our program, this is the lesson "My Fort": the rules I keep.
