What is Monopoly Go?

Short answer: A free phone game by Scopely, based on the Monopoly board game.

Players roll dice to move around themed boards, earn Monopoly money, and build houses and hotels. They can raid or help friends' boards, join events and tournaments, and play mini-games such as Prize Drop, a plinko game. A big part of the game is collecting Stickers into albums and trading them with friends.

Monopoly Go age rating: what's in it

Short answer: It's 9+ on the App Store and Everyone on Google Play.

  • App Store: 9+, for infrequent cartoon or fantasy violence and mature or suggestive themes; contains loot boxes and advertising.
  • Google Play: Everyone, for mild fantasy violence, with in-game purchases that include random items.
  • Younger players: Scopely's legal page says Monopoly Go and Stumble Guys are open to younger players, and that it limits some features by age.

Dice rolls and random sticker packs

Short answer: Dice decide each move, and sticker packs have random contents.

Apple says the game "Contains Loot Boxes," and Google Play labels its purchases "Includes Random Items": players don't know exactly which stickers they'll get. Among listed App Store purchases, offers cost $1.99 to $99.99. We couldn't confirm the odds for each pack.

Is there chat in Monopoly Go?

Short answer: Neither app store lists chat for the game itself, but Scopely makes a separate chat app rated 18+.

MONOPOLY GO!Chat lets players message friends and teammates and join groups to plan sticker trades. Apple rates it 18+, listing infrequent profanity or crude humor, mature or suggestive themes, horror or fear themes, and user-generated content.

The habit kids may copy: waiting for the lucky roll

In Monopoly Go, the dice and the sticker packs are luck. Kids who watch can come to think the next roll or the next pack will be the one.

Try tonight: two baskets for a dice game

Play any board game with dice. After each turn, sort it out loud: the roll goes in one basket, the choice goes in the other. Ask: "Was that up to you, or up to the dice?" In our program, this is the lesson "Two Baskets": what's up to me, and what isn't.
