What is Coin Master?

Short answer: A free phone game by Moon Active, built around a slot-machine-style wheel.

Players spin the wheel to win coins, attacks, raids, and shields. Coins build villages; attacks and raids take coins from friends' villages. Players also collect cards to complete sets. Moon Active's terms say the game is for amusement only and that no real money or prizes can be won.

Coin Master age rating: what's in it

Short answer: It's 18+ on the App Store and under Moon Active's terms, and Teen on Google Play.

  • App Store: 18+, for frequent simulated gambling, contests, and infrequent cartoon or fantasy violence; contains loot boxes, advertising, and messaging and chat.
  • Google Play: Teen, for simulated gambling, with in-game purchases that include random items.
  • Terms: Moon Active lists some games for ages 16 and up; Coin Master isn't on that list, so its terms require players to be 18 or the age of majority, whichever is higher.

Germany's case against Coin Master

Short answer: In 2020, a German state media authority concluded a proceeding over whether Coin Master could be distributed there in its earlier form.

The Landesanstalt für Medien NRW says the proceeding, begun with the KJM, ended with legal force on April 3, 2020, after Moon Active added double age verification, blocked minors, added a notice on turning off in-app purchases, and ended its German influencer campaign. iphone-ticker.de reported the same on April 7, 2020.

The habit kids may copy: spin again

Every spin might be the big win, and the wheel is built to look like a slot machine. Kids who watch can pick up the "one more spin" feeling.

Try tonight: the wanting wave

Put a treat on the table and set a one-minute timer. Your child waits and watches how the wanting feels: big at first, then smaller. Say: "I want it, and I can wait." In our program, this is the lesson "I'm the Boss of My Want": practicing the pause between wanting something and getting it.
