Netflix parental controls: what parents of kids 4–7 should know

Netflix parental controls are set profile by profile: a kids profile, a maturity rating limit, blocked titles, and a PIN lock, according to Netflix's Help Center. Parents can also see a profile's viewing history and switch off autoplay. Apple's App Store rates the Netflix app 13+, listing realistic violence, horror, profanity, and sexual content across the library. In 2026, the attorneys general of Texas and Florida sued Netflix, alleging misuse of children's data and addictive autoplay. Netflix says it will fight both suits and that they lack merit.

What is Netflix?

Short answer: A streaming service with movies, series, and games, made by Netflix, Inc.

The library runs from preschool shows to series rated TV-MA, so what a child sees depends on how each profile is set. The App Store lists no messaging or chat in the app.

Netflix parental controls: what's in it

Short answer: Six tools, set per profile, according to Netflix's Help Center.

  • Kids profile: a profile using the Netflix Kids experience.
  • Maturity ratings: a rating limit for each profile, which also covers games.
  • Blocked titles: specific shows or movies can be hidden from a profile.
  • Profile lock: a PIN on a profile, plus an option to require a PIN to add a new profile.
  • Viewing history: parents can see what a profile has watched.
  • Autoplay: previews and the next episode can be set not to play on their own.

Is Netflix safe for kids? The ratings

Short answer: The app is rated 13+ on Apple's App Store and Teen on Google Play, because the full library includes older content.

Apple lists realistic and cartoon violence, horror, profanity, mature themes, drug references, sexual content, and weapons. Apple says some content may be rated higher and is managed through in-app controls. In the App Store, plans cost $19.99 or $26.99 a month.

Has Netflix been sued?

Short answer: Yes, by two states in 2026.

In May 2026, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Netflix, alleging it collected viewing and device data, including from kids' profiles, without consent, and used addictive features like autoplay, NBC DFW reported. Netflix said the suit "lacks merit and is based on inaccurate and distorted information." In September 2026, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sued over similar claims about children's data, according to WUSF. Netflix told NBC News the Florida suit "lacks merit" and that it will defend it. We found no ruling in either case as of October 2026.

The habit kids may copy: "one more episode"

When autoplay is on, the next episode starts by itself. Stopping becomes the part that takes effort.

Try tonight: decide before you press play

Agree on the number before the first episode starts. Say it together: "Two shows, then the TV goes to sleep." When the second one ends, let your child press the off button. In our program, this is the lesson "I'm the Boss of My Want": practicing the pause between wanting something and getting it.
