Disney Plus parental controls: what parents of kids 4–7 should know

Disney Plus parental controls are set profile by profile: Junior Mode for young kids, a four-digit Profile PIN, and a content rating limit for each profile. According to Disney, Junior Mode shows only content suitable for all ages, has no commercial interruptions, and has a Kid-Proof Exit. The default rating for the main profile, and any profile with a birth date 18 or older, is TV-MA, the highest. Apple's App Store rates the Disney+ app 13+.

What is Disney+?

Short answer: Disney's streaming service, with movies and series from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.

In the US, the app also includes a selection of Hulu and ESPN content and a live ABC News feed, according to its App Store listing. The library runs from preschool shows to series rated TV-MA, so what a child sees depends on the profile settings.

Disney Plus parental controls: what's in it

Short answer: Four tools, all set per profile, according to Disney's guide.

  • Junior Mode: only content suitable for all ages, no commercial interruptions; ratings can't be raised in it.
  • Kid-Proof Exit: a child has to complete an exit challenge to leave Junior Mode.
  • Profile PIN: a four-digit code that stops kids from switching to an unrestricted profile.
  • Content ratings: titles rated above a profile's limit don't show up in browsing or search. Ratings follow the TV Parental Guidelines, from TV-Y (all children) to TV-MA (mature audiences).

Owners can also lock profile creation with a password and hide unrated titles like live sports and news. Step by step: how to set up Disney+ parental controls.

Is Disney Plus safe for kids? The ratings

Short answer: The app is rated 13+ on Apple's App Store and Teen on Google Play, because the full library includes older content.

Apple lists infrequent violence, horror, profanity, mature themes, drug references, and sexual content or nudity. The default rating for an adult profile is TV-MA, the highest, so a child using a parent's profile isn't limited by a rating. The App Store lists no messaging or chat. ABC News isn't rated, and Disney says it needs a profile set to TV-MA.

Plans, ads, and the FTC case

Short answer: The cheaper US plan has ads; Junior Mode has no commercial interruptions.

In the App Store, Disney+ Basic costs $12.49 a month and Premium $21.49 a month. Basic is Disney's ad-supported plan.

In September 2025, the FTC announced that Disney would pay $10 million to settle allegations that it let personal data be collected from children under 13 who watched its kid-directed YouTube videos, because many were labeled "Not Made for Kids." The case was about YouTube, not Disney+. We found no government action against Disney+ itself.

The habit kids may copy: "one more episode"

Streaming services start the next episode on their own unless it's switched off. Stopping is the part a child has to learn.

Try tonight: decide before you press play

Agree on the number before the first episode starts. Say it together: "Two shows, then the TV goes to sleep." When the second one ends, let your child press the off button. In our program, this is the lesson "I'm the Boss of My Want": practicing the pause between wanting something and getting it.
