GameChat and parental controls

Short answer: Kids under 16 need a parent to set up GameChat in Nintendo's Parental Controls app.

Per Nintendo, players under 16 can chat only with friends a parent has approved, and each video chat needs a parent's OK. A membership is required to use GameChat. Nintendo's Parental Controls app, which Nintendo describes as free, can also limit daily play time, block games by ESRB rating, and limit eShop spending.

The habit kids may copy: one more round

Online matches end and a new one starts right away, so there's rarely a natural stopping point.

Try tonight: decide the stop before you start

Before your child plays, agree on a number together: two races or three levels. Say: "When we reach the number, we stop and choose what's next." Let them say the number out loud. In our program, this is the lesson "My Fort": the rules I keep.
