What is Numberblocks?

Short answer: A short animated series in which numbers are characters made of blocks.

In a place called Numberland, cheerful characters made of blocks work, play and sing together, per Netflix. Common Sense Media says the short videos teach numbers, counting and other early math concepts. Joe Elliot created it, and Alphablocks Ltd made it with the animation studio Blue Zoo. It premiered on the BBC's CBeebies channel on January 23, 2017, with 30 five-minute episodes, per Kidscreen, and later seasons followed.

Why young kids know Numberblocks

It airs on CBeebies and streams on Netflix in some countries. Kidscreen reported that it was made with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics, a UK body for math teaching, and that it complements the earlier letters show Alphablocks.

The habit kids may copy: counting everything

The Numberblocks count out loud and sing about numbers. Kids may start counting stairs, snacks and toes out loud too.

Try tonight: the block that didn't fit

Build a tower of blocks or cups together until it falls. Say: "It fell. Not yet! Let's try another way." Let your child pick the new way. In our program, this is the lesson "Not Yet": the trying matters.
