Osmo age range: what parents of kids 4–7 should know

Osmo age range: the maker, Play Osmo, says its kits are for ages 3 to 10. The Little Genius Starter Kit is labeled for ages 3 to 5 and the Genius Starter Kit for ages 6 to 10. Every kit needs a tablet you already own, an iPad on iPadOS 15 or later or a Fire tablet. We found no CPSC recall of Osmo as of October 2026. Osmo says that after BYJU'S collapsed, its apps stopped working in 2024; Osmo says that in late 2025 a small team of former employees bought the brand out of bankruptcy (the asset sale to Play Osmo, Inc. was announced January 2026), and that apps are returning one at a time.

What is Osmo?

Short answer: Physical game pieces that work with a tablet's camera.

The tablet stands in an Osmo Base, and a red reflector clips over its camera so it can see the table. Kids move letter tiles, number tiles, Tangram shapes, coding blocks, or a drawing pen, and the game on screen reacts. Games include Words, Numbers, Tangram, Newton, Masterpiece, and Coding.

Osmo age range: what the labels say

Short answer: The maker says 3 to 10, split by kit.

  • Little Genius Starter Kit: ages 3–5, letters, phonics, and creativity; $80.99.
  • Genius Starter Kit: ages 6–10, math, spelling, and drawing; $89.99.
  • Creative and Coding kits: ages 5–10; $62.99 and $89.99.
  • Choking warning: we didn't find one on the official product pages, so we couldn't confirm the wording.
  • Recalls: none found in the CPSC database.

Is Osmo still in business?

Short answer: Yes. A new company, Play Osmo, now owns it.

BYJU'S bought Osmo in 2019. When BYJU'S collapsed, Osmo's apps stopped working in 2024, the company says. Osmo says that in late 2025 a small team of former employees bought the brand out of bankruptcy (the asset sale to Play Osmo, Inc. was announced January 2026). They say the store is shipping, apps are coming back one at a time, and some licensed titles won't return.

The habit kids may copy: one more round

Osmo games give quick feedback on the screen. When it's time to stop, some kids ask for one more puzzle, then another.

Try tonight: the last round

Before play starts, agree on a number: three rounds. After the last one, both of you take a breath together and say: "Stop, breathe, choose what's next." Let your child choose the next activity. In our program, this is the lesson "The Pause Button": stop, breathe, choose.
