What are Smiskis?

Short answer: Tiny figures made by Dreams Inc., the Japanese company that also makes Sonny Angel; Wikipedia and retailers say they glow in the dark.

Each series has a theme, like Construction, Bath, or Yoga, and each figure is posed doing something small: digging a hole, loosening a bolt, hiding in a corner.

Smiski age: what the labels say

Short answer: Retail listings say 15+.

  • Buchmann (Switzerland) and others: 15 and up for several series.
  • Newegg: 12+ for a Smiski strap accessory.
  • Walmart: not suitable for children under 3.
  • Dreams' site: the pages we read didn't show an age.

Are Smiskis blind boxes?

Short answer: Yes.

Dreams' Construction Series page says each series has 6 variations "plus a secret Smiski that is rare to find," that secret figures "are distributed randomly and may not always be included" in a full box, and that "you won't know which one you'll get until you open the box." We couldn't find reliable data on resale prices.

The habit kids may copy: the secret one

Every series has one figure that's hard to get, and it's the one people talk about.

Try tonight: the glow hunt

Hide a few small toys you already own around a dim room and look for them with a flashlight. When one is hard to find, say: "Not found yet. Let's keep looking." In our program, this is the lesson "Not Yet": the trying matters.
