Around 2013 and 2014, chain messages claimed the app was a front for predators, or that "hackers" chatted live with children. Snopes rated the claim that the app unsafely asks kids for personal information False, saying its testing found nothing beyond what the app was meant to do. Snopes noted that the original app's robotic text chat worked only when Child Mode was off, and Common Sense Media says the allegations "have been debunked."

Try tonight: true or made up?

Tell your child two short "news" stories about the family cat or a toy: one true, one silly. Ask: "True or made up? How can we check?" Then check together. In our program, this is the lesson "True or Made Up": checking a fear against the facts.
