What happened with Telegram's founder in France?
Short answer: Pavel Durov was placed under formal investigation in Paris in August 2024, and the case was still open as of October 2026. Durov denies wrongdoing.
According to Al Jazeera, the allegations include complicity in running a platform that allows illicit transactions, child sexual abuse images, and drug trafficking, and refusing to give information to authorities. Formal investigation doesn't mean guilt. France lifted his travel ban in November 2025. We found no trial date.
Australia's fine
In February 2025, Australia's eSafety Commissioner fined Telegram about A$1 million (A$957,780) for answering 160 days late to questions about how it fights child sexual abuse material and violent extremist content. Telegram called the penalty unfair and said it would appeal. We couldn't confirm the outcome of Telegram's appeal.
The habit kids may copy: talking to anyone who answers
In a big group, anyone can write to anyone. Kids may treat a friendly stranger like a friend.
