The Magic School Bus is based on the Scholastic books by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. The original animated series aired on PBS from September 11, 1994, to December 8, 1997, with Lily Tomlin as Ms. Frizzle, according to Wikipedia. The Magic School Bus Rides Again premiered on Netflix on September 29, 2017, with a second season on April 13, 2018. Ms. Frizzle's younger sister Fiona (Kate McKinnon) takes the wheel and leads the class on field trips, each built around a science topic such as ecosystems.

Magic School Bus age rating: what's in it

Short answer: Both series are TV-Y in the US; Rides Again is U in the UK.

  • US: TV-Y, designed for all children, for both series (per Rotten Tomatoes).
  • Netflix: maturity rating "All" for Rides Again.
  • UK (BBFC): U for Rides Again; most episodes list very mild threat.
  • Common Sense Media: 5+ for both.

For Rides Again, Common Sense Media describes kids in presumed peril, falling down cliffs or chased by creatures, but never in real danger given their access to magic. It notes some insects look scary at life size, and finds no bad language, sex, or drinking.

Is The Magic School Bus educational?

Short answer: Common Sense Media calls Rides Again an effective way to introduce science concepts. Each episode introduces a broad scientific idea and follows the class on a magical field trip to learn about it. For the original series, it says the show promotes curiosity, experimentation, and learning about science, though some lessons may be a bit hard to follow.

The habit kids may copy: trying it to see

On every field trip, Ms. Frizzle's class takes chances to find out how something works, and plans don't always go the way they expected.

Try tonight: sink or float

Fill a bowl with water and guess together which things will float: a spoon, a grape, a cork. Test each one. When a guess is wrong, say: "Not yet! Let's try another." In our program, this is the lesson "Not Yet": the trying matters.
