What is a Toniebox?

A Toniebox is a screen-free audio player for kids. You put a magnetic figure, called a Tonie, on top, and it plays the stories or songs linked to that figure. tonies' current players are the Toniebox 2 and the smaller Toniebox Lite, launched in the US in August 2026 and labeled 1+; tonies says both play all Tonies. tonies sells licensed figures and sets, including Bluey, PAW Patrol, Disney, and Ms. Rachel.

Toniebox age: what the label says

Short answer: tonies lists the Toniebox 2 alone for ages 1 and up, and a starter set that includes a figure for ages 3 and up.

  • Player alone: "Age 1+"; its page warns about flashing lights.
  • Starter set (Disney Frozen): "Age 3+," with "CHOKING HAZARD - small parts. Not for children under 36 months of age."
  • Lights: the product "may contain bright, flashing lights that may cause seizures for those with photosensitive epilepsy."
  • Magnets: all Tonies contain magnets; tonies says to keep them away from medical devices such as defibrillators.

The tonies app is rated 4+ on Apple's App Store.

Has the Toniebox been recalled?

Short answer: No recall of the Toniebox itself was found as of October 2026, but tonies Blocks were recalled in 2022.

In March 2022, Boxine U.S. recalled about 4,200 tonies Blocks (Marine Life, Invention and Innovation, and Gentle Giant Dinos) because a magnet could come loose and be swallowed. They were sold only at tonies.com; there was one report of a detached magnet and no injuries.

Yoto vs Tonies: the main differences

Both are screen-free audio players. Yoto labels its products 3+; tonies lists the Toniebox 2 alone as 1+ and a starter set with a figure as 3+. The Toniebox plays content from magnetic figures; the Yoto Player plays it from cards. Compared like with like in the US: the Toniebox 2 alone is $129.99 and the Yoto Player 4th Gen is $149.99; the smaller Toniebox Lite starts at $79.99 in a set, and the Yoto Mini 4th Gen is $109.99. Yoto's earlier Mini speakers were recalled in 2024 over battery overheating; we found no recall of the Toniebox itself. More in our Yoto Player guide and our Tonies vs Yoto comparison.

The habit kids may copy: one more story

The child runs the box: put a figure on, and the next story starts. At bedtime, "one more" is easy to ask for.

Try tonight: whose basket?

Before bedtime, sort it out loud together: "Picking the story is up to you. When lights go off isn't." Then let them pick. In our program, this is the lesson "Two Baskets": what's up to me, and what isn't.
