What is Tynker?

Tynker teaches coding with visual blocks first and then text languages such as Python, Swift and JavaScript, per its App Store page. It includes puzzles, game-building, Minecraft modding on iPad, and coding paths with Barbie, LEGO and Minecraft. Tynker Junior is a version that needs no reading. CodeHS, an education company, acquired Tynker in May 2025 and kept it as a standalone platform.

Tynker: what's in the app

Short answer: Both apps are rated 4+, but Apple lists the main app for ages 9–11.

  • Tynker (App Store): 4+, "Made for Ages 9–11"; Messaging and Chat, User-Generated Content; parental controls; infrequent contests.
  • Tynker Junior (App Store): 4+, "Made for Ages 6–8"; parental controls.
  • Common Sense Media: 5+ for Tynker Junior.

Apple notes that some content "may be rated higher" and is managed by the developer through in-app controls.

Tynker community and privacy

Short answer: Projects start private, and a parent can turn off the community.

Tynker's privacy policy says saved projects are private by default, and published projects must be approved by Tynker. Other users can remix published projects and access published voice recordings or photos. A parent, guardian, teacher or school administrator "can disable the community function" of a student account. We found no FTC or state action naming Tynker as of October 2026.

The habit kids may copy: getting it right the first time

Code either runs or it doesn't. A bug can feel like a failure to a young child.
