What Minecraft is
Minecraft is a building and survival game made by Mojang Studios, owned by Microsoft. Players gather blocks, build, explore, and fight monsters such as zombies and creepers. In Creative mode there are no enemies, just building; in Survival mode, players need to find food and stay safe at night.
Players can play alone, with family on the same device or network, or online with others on public servers or on Realms, paid private worlds for invited players.
Minecraft age rating: what the ratings say
Ratings differ by country. The ESRB (US and Canada) rates current console versions of Minecraft E10+ (Everyone 10+) for fantasy violence, and lists two interactive elements: Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. PEGI, used in Europe and the UK, rates Minecraft: Java Edition 7 for violence and fear. Germany's USK rates it 6, noting comic violence, chats, and in-game purchases. On Apple's App Store, it's 9+.
Is Minecraft safe for kids? Online play and chat
Short answer: The game itself is rated E10+ (everyone 10 and older) in the US, 7 by PEGI in Europe, and 6 by USK in Germany. The main risks are online: chat with strangers on public servers and purchases with real money. On a child's Microsoft account, online multiplayer and chat are off by default until a parent turns them on.
Minecraft uses a Microsoft account. According to Minecraft, child accounts must belong to an adult's Microsoft family group, and by default online multiplayer and communication are blocked; only an adult in the family group can change this. Parental controls don't apply to versions older than 1.16.4 or to modded versions.
Public servers are run by other people, not by Mojang, and have their own chat and rules. Minecraft can be played offline, on a Realm limited to invited players, or on public servers.
Purchases
The game itself is a one-time purchase. Extra worlds, skins, and texture packs are sold in the Minecraft Marketplace for Minecoins, which cost real money, and Realms is a paid subscription. Purchases can be restricted in the Microsoft family settings.
A Minecraft Movie and the "chicken jockey" moment
Ratings for A Minecraft Movie (2025):
- US: PG, parental guidance suggested, with no age limit. Reasons: violence/action, language, suggestive/rude humor, and some scary images.
- UK: PG, also parental guidance, no age limit.
- Germany: 12; children 6 to 11 can see it in theaters only with a parent.
A scene in which "Chicken jockey!" is shouted became a trend: audiences shouted the line and threw popcorn, and some theaters began requiring minors to be accompanied by an adult.
Is there a Minecraft Movie 2?
Short answer: Yes. The sequel, titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, is scheduled for US theaters on July 23, 2027.
Jared Hess returns as director, and Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge return to the cast. Kirsten Dunst joins the cast. It doesn't have a rating yet.
The habit kids may copy: do it because everyone does
Joining in with the crowd is part of the trend. The habit kids may copy: doing something only because everyone else is, even when it's loud or unkind.

What the research says
There's no large study of this game and young children specifically. Research on screen time in general gives some context. A 2022 meta-analysis of 87 studies with about 159,000 children ages 12 and under found that more screen time was linked to slightly more behavior problems, such as aggression and anxiety; the link was small, and it doesn't show cause and effect. More in screen time and child development.
In US survey data from 2024, parents reported that about 1 in 5 children ages 6 to 11 spent four or more hours a day on screens on most weekdays, not counting schoolwork. See how much screen time kids get.
