Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines 2022: what's inside
The Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines are the state's description of what children typically learn in pre-K, organized into 10 domains. Six domains have outcomes for both 3- and 4-year-olds; Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts, and Technology have outcomes for 4-year-olds only. The 2022 edition is a free 87-page PDF from the Texas Education Agency, not a curriculum with lesson plans.

What it is and who made it
The 2022 edition covers both PK3 and PK4. Each domain lists outcomes with examples of child behaviors, and each domain's introduction includes notes for educators.
The guidelines say they're meant for school districts, Head Start, child care programs, and families. They also say that children develop at different rates, that the guidelines are not meant to speed up or delay teaching, and that they aren't intended to be used as a curriculum, an assessment tool, or a checklist.

How a parent could use it at home
- Don't read it cover to cover. Pick one domain at a time and skim the outcomes for your child's age.
- Use it as a reference to notice what your week leaves out. If your weeks are full of books and counting but have no music or art, the Fine Arts domain is a nudge.
- Look at the examples of child behaviors. They can help you notice skills in play you might otherwise overlook.
- Pair it with a full-year free program, such as Boston's Focus on Pre-K, if you want weekly plans.
- Keep the ranges in mind. A 4-year-old who isn't doing something described yet may simply be on their own timeline.
These tips are ours, not the program's.
