What does 67 mean? The "6-7" (six seven) meme, explained for parents

What does 67, or 6-7, mean? Mostly nothing. "Six seven" is a phrase kids shout, often with a gesture of both palms up moving up and down, whenever the numbers 6 or 7 come up, or as a reply to almost anything. It comes from the rap song "Doot Doot (6 7)" by Skrilla, released in late 2024, and spread through basketball videos. Dictionary.com named it Word of the Year for 2025 and called it "impossible to define." It isn't rude.

What does 6-7 mean?

Short answer: It doesn't have a fixed meaning.

Dictionary.com, which named "67" its Word of the Year for 2025, calls it impossible to define. Some people use it to mean "so-so" or "maybe this, maybe that"; many kids just shout it whenever 6 or 7 comes up, or as an answer to any question, to get a reaction.

Where 6-7 came from

The phrase comes from "Doot Doot (6 7)" by Philadelphia rapper Skrilla. In 2025, it spread through TikTok edits of basketball players, including LaMelo Ball, who is listed at 6 feet 7 inches. A video posted March 31, 2025, of a boy at a youth basketball game shouting "six seven" with the palms-up gesture went viral, and he became known as the "67 Kid." By October 2025, Dictionary.com reported that searches had risen more than sixfold since June.

Is 6-7 rude?

Short answer: No. The phrase and the gesture aren't rude or sexual.

The complaints are about disruption: teachers have described lessons derailed whenever a 6 or 7 comes up, and some teachers banned the phrase in their classrooms.

Why kids love it

It's easy to join, everyone knows it, and it reliably gets a reaction from adults. Dictionary.com notes that some young people use it to frustrate adults. Part of the fun is that adults don't get it.

The habit kids may copy: the joke that won't stop

"Six seven" is funny the first time. The tenth time, at dinner, during homework, it's a way to get attention.

Try tonight: ask them to teach you

Ask: "Can you teach me 6-7? What does it mean to you?" Let your child explain. Then agree on one place where it's a no-6-7 zone, like the dinner table. In our program, this is the lesson "Two Roads": noticing that there's a choice.
