What is Italian Brainrot?
Short answer: It's a set of absurd AI-generated meme characters with fake-Italian names and voiceovers.
The trend started on TikTok in early 2025. Each character is a strange hybrid, such as a shark wearing sneakers, a ballerina with a cappuccino cup for a head, or a crocodile that's also a bomber plane, introduced by a dramatic, mostly nonsense voiceover. It isn't really Italian: some names come from Italian words, and one of the biggest characters comes from Indonesia.
The best-known characters
- Tralalero Tralala: a shark in blue sneakers, usually called the first Italian Brainrot. More
- Tung Tung Tung Sahur: a wooden figure holding a bat, from an Indonesian video. More
- Ballerina Cappuccina: a ballerina with a cappuccino cup for a head; the first video passed 19 million TikTok views in three weeks.
- Bombardiro Crocodilo: a crocodile-headed bomber plane.
Is Italian Brainrot bad for kids? What's in the audio
Short answer: Most clips are nonsense, but some original voiceovers include swearing and violent references that kids repeat without understanding.
- Swearing: the original Tralalero Tralala audio includes Italian blasphemy, swearing against God. Many re-uploads and kids' versions leave it out.
- War references: some versions of Bombardiro Crocodilo's narration say the crocodile bombs children in Gaza; some viewers called it tasteless.
- AI content: the characters are made with generative AI, and copycat videos are endless.
The characters are now in toys, a sticker album, Fortnite skins, and the Roblox game Steal a Brainrot.
What "brainrot" means
"Brain rot" was Oxford's Word of the Year for 2024. Oxford defines it as the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especially as the result of overconsumption of material, now particularly online content, considered to be trivial or unchallenging. It's not a medical condition. Kids often use "brainrot" for any silly, random content, including their own jokes.
The habit kids may copy: repeating words they don't understand
Kids learn the chants by heart, including words in other languages that they've never had translated.
Try tonight: "What does it mean?"
When your child repeats a chant, ask: "Do you know what those words mean? Let's find out together." Look one up. In our program, this is the lesson "True or Made Up": checking before you believe or repeat.
