American Girl: what parents of kids 4–7 should know

American Girl labels its classic 18-inch dolls, such as Truly Me and Girl of the Year, "Ages 6+" on its official shop. Its newer AG Sisters dolls are labeled 4+, and My First dolls 18 months and up. One AG Sisters doll page carries a choking warning for children under 3. Some accessories come in mystery packs with one item you can't choose, and the CPSC lists a 2006 recall of American Girl children's jewelry for lead.

What is American Girl?

Short answer: A brand of 18-inch dolls with books about each character.

Pleasant Rowland started it as Pleasant Company in 1986, selling three historical dolls by mail-order catalog, and Mattel bought it in 1998, according to Wikipedia. Today the shop sells historical characters, a yearly Girl of the Year, customizable Truly Me dolls, smaller AG Sisters and WellieWishers dolls, and My First dolls for toddlers. A Truly Me doll costs $135 as of October 2026.

American Girl: what the labels say

Short answer: 18-inch dolls are labeled 6+; younger lines start at 18 months and 4+.

  • 18-inch dolls (Truly Me, Girl of the Year): "Ages 6+."
  • AG Sisters dolls: 4+.
  • My First dolls: 18 months and up.
  • Books: many are tagged 8+ on the shop.
  • Choking warning: "Toy contains small parts. Not for children under 3 years," on an AG Sisters doll.

American Girl mystery packs

Short answer: Yes, a few accessories are sold so you don't know which one you'll get.

The Mini Mystery Pack ($12) holds one of six doll-sized dishes. The Craving Carryout Collection Mystery Pack ($5) is described as a blind pack with one of ten doll-sized take-out meals, and one is marked "rare pack!" Both are labeled 6+.

Has American Girl been recalled?

Short answer: Yes, jewelry for girls in 2006 and a licensed craft kit in 2011. American Girl recalled about 180,000 necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and hair accessories for girls in 2006 because they contained high levels of lead; the recall didn't include jewelry for dolls. In 2011, EKSuccess Brands recalled an American Girl Crafts bead bracelet kit over lead in a surface coating. We found no CPSC recall of the dolls themselves.

The habit kids may copy: the next set

Each doll has outfits, furniture, and accessories sold separately. The shop always has one more piece.

Try tonight: what she already has

Ask your child to show you three things their doll already has, and make up a story with only those. Say: "Look what's already here." In our program, this is the lesson "Enough": noticing what's already here.
