Cabbage Patch Kids: what parents of kids 4–7 should know

Cabbage Patch Kids are soft-bodied dolls sold since 1982, each with its own name and "adoption" papers. We couldn't confirm the maker's age label for the current dolls on an official page. The brand's best-known safety case is from 1996 and 1997: the CPSC and Mattel warned that Snacktime Kids dolls could catch children's hair and fingers in their chewing mouths, and Mattel then offered a $40 refund and pulled about 500,000 of the dolls. We found no other CPSC recall of Cabbage Patch Kids.

The Snacktime Kids dolls (1996–1997)

Short answer: A Mattel doll that "ate" plastic snacks was pulled after reports of hair and fingers getting caught.

On December 31, 1996, the CPSC and Mattel announced a warning after 35 incidents, with no serious injuries reported. On January 6, 1997, they announced a voluntary refund program: a $40 refund and withdrawal from US stores. About 500,000 had been sold. The CPSC release said neither Mattel's nor the CPSC's testing had found a serious safety hazard.

The habit kids may copy: adopting, not buying

Each doll comes with a name and papers, and kids are told they're adopting, not buying.

Try tonight: taking care

Give your child a doll or stuffed animal to look after until bedtime. Ask: "What does your baby need right now? What can you do, and what can't you?" In our program, this is the lesson "Two Baskets": what's up to me, and what isn't.
