Disney Plus parental controls: how to set them up

Disney Plus parental controls are set profile by profile from EDIT PROFILES, in the Disney+ mobile app or a web browser. Turn on Junior Mode for your child's profile, then add a Profile PIN to every adult profile so your child can't switch into one. Disney says the default rating for the primary profile, and any profile with a birth date of 18 or older, is TV-MA. You can also require your password to create new profiles and hide live and unrated titles.

How to turn on Junior Mode for your child's profile

Short answer: Edit your child's profile and switch it to Junior Mode.

  1. Select EDIT PROFILES, choose your child's profile, and switch on Junior Mode (Disney says it can be turned on or off in the app or a supported web browser).
  2. In the profile settings, turn on Kid-Proof Exit if you want your child to complete an exit challenge before leaving Junior Mode.

Junior Mode shows only content for all ages.

How to set a content rating for a profile

Short answer: Pick the highest rating a profile can see; anything above it disappears from browsing and search.

  1. Go to your profiles and select EDIT PROFILES.
  2. Select the profile you'd like to edit.
  3. Under PARENTAL CONTROLS, select Content rating.
  4. Enter your password.
  5. Choose the content rating you'd like to set and select Save.

Disney says these profile settings can also apply to Hulu content and selected ESPN content available in Disney+.

How to add a Profile PIN to adult profiles

Short answer: A 4-digit PIN keeps your child from opening a profile with fewer limits.

  1. Go to your profiles and select EDIT PROFILES.
  2. Select your profile.
  3. Select Profile PIN under PARENTAL CONTROLS.
  4. Enter your password and select Continue.
  5. Enter a PIN and select Save.

Repeat this for every profile that isn't in Junior Mode. If you forget the PIN, select Forgot your PIN? and verify with your password.

How to restrict profile creation and hide live content

Short answer: Require your password for new profiles, and turn off unrated live titles on your child's profile.

  1. In the mobile app or a web browser, go to your Account.
  2. Under SETTINGS, turn Restrict profile creation on.
  3. Enter your password and select Continue.
  4. To hide live and unrated titles on a profile, go to EDIT PROFILES, select the profile, and turn off the setting Allow titles without ratings like live sports, news, and more.

This live-content setting is on by default unless the profile is in Junior Mode.

What these settings can't do

  • They can't be changed on a TV. Disney+ says parental controls can be managed only in the mobile app or a supported web browser.
  • Promotions aren't filtered. Content rating settings don't affect titles shown in on-service promotions.
  • A PIN protects one profile. It locks only the profile it's set on, so any adult profile without a PIN stays open to a child who can tap it.
  • Live content is on by default. Disney notes live content and live ads may feature mature themes until you turn the setting off.

What the settings can't teach, and what your child can learn

Settings are a fence, not a skill: Junior Mode decides what's on the shelf, but not how a child handles "one more episode." In our program, 5- and 6-year-olds practice:

  • "The Pause Button" (stop, breathe, choose) for the moment the credits roll and the next episode counts down.
  • "The Wave" (big feelings rise, peak, and pass) for the upset when the screen goes off.
  • "Wisdom" (thinking before deciding) for choosing what to watch from the row of tiles instead of tapping the first one.

In our program, these are practiced offline, in 20-minute sessions twice a week, before kids need them online.
