What is Masha and the Bear?

Short answer: An animated series about a lively little girl, Masha, and her friend the Bear, a retired circus animal.

It's made by the studio Animaccord, first came out in 2009 and is loosely based on a Russian folk tale, per Euronews. It's watched in more than 100 countries. In June 2026, Netflix acquired seasons 8 and 9, ComingSoon reported, citing Deadline.

Is Masha and the Bear bad for kids? What the ratings say

Short answer: We don't give verdicts. It's rated for all children in the US and the UK.

  • US: TV-Y on Netflix.
  • UK (BBFC): U for seasons 5 and 6 on Netflix, with "violence" listed as the content note.
  • Common Sense Media: 4+. It notes Masha's mishaps, such as falling out of trees, and lists no language or sexual content. It calls the Bear "a model of patience and kindness."

Is Masha and the Bear banned?

Short answer: We found no full ban as of October 2026, but Ukraine has sanctioned its makers.

In August 2025, Russian TV host Grigory Azarenok claimed Ukraine had banned the show; the fact-checker Antifake found no such ban and traced the claim to a satirical Telegram channel. In 2017, a commission of Ukraine's State Film Agency considered a request to ban it, Euronews reported.

Ukraine's 2026 sanctions

Short answer: On August 20, 2026, President Zelenskyy signed sanctions on Animaccord and the show's creators.

His office said the show "spreads pro-Russian narratives disguised as children's content," per Euronews. The measures include asset freezes and limits on distributing the show in Ukraine; the culture minister said they create legal grounds to block it there (Al Jazeera). Animaccord "strongly rejected" the allegations. Earlier in 2026, more than 50 British MPs asked the UK culture secretary to push streamers to remove it, Euronews reported.

The habit kids may copy: mischief first

Masha's antics are all in fun, Common Sense Media says, but they often have unintended consequences for the kindly Bear.

Try tonight: the pause button

Play "Masha says": before touching anything new in the room, your child presses an imaginary pause button and asks: "Stop. Whose is it? What could happen?" In our program, this is the lesson "The Pause Button": stop, breathe, choose.
