Meta Quest 3 age requirement: what parents should know

Meta Quest 3 age requirement: Meta's safety warnings say using a Quest requires an account with a minimum age of 10, which may vary by country, and that children should always be supervised by an adult. Children 10 to 12 need a parent-managed account, where a parent approves apps and sets limits. In Horizon Worlds, Meta's social VR space, parents of 10- to 12-year-olds approve which worlds their child can visit. Meta also says the headset isn't recommended for younger or smaller children.

What is Meta Quest 3?

Short answer: A virtual reality headset made by Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram.

The headset shows games and apps around the player. It needs a Meta account, and apps come from Meta's store. Some apps, like Horizon Worlds, let players meet and talk with other people in VR.

Meta Quest 3 age requirement: the facts

Short answer: 10 and up, with a parent-managed account until 13.

  • Meta's warnings: a minimum age of 10 (may vary by country); children should always be supervised by an adult; the headset is "not recommended for use by younger or smaller-sized children."
  • Ages 10–12: a parent sets up the account and can approve app downloads, set time limits, and adjust privacy, according to Road to VR's report on Meta's 2023 change.
  • Phone app: the Meta Horizon app is 9+ on the App Store, with infrequent cartoon violence, mature themes, horror, and weapons.

Horizon Worlds, chat, and purchases

Short answer: Kids can meet strangers in some apps, and the store sells apps and items.

  • Horizon Worlds: since 2024, parents can approve worlds for 10- to 12-year-olds; worlds are rated 10+, 13+, or 18+. For preteens, a Personal Boundary around their avatar can't be turned off, per Meta.
  • Purchases: apps and in-world purchases; the Meta Horizon app's App Store listing shows Horizon in-world purchases from $0.99 to $29.99.
  • Scrutiny: in September 2025, former Meta researchers, as whistleblowers, alleged to a Senate subcommittee that Meta suppressed research on risks to children in VR. Meta denies it. We found no lawsuit or fine about Quest as of October 2026.

The habit kids may copy: losing track of the room

In a headset, the real room disappears; players can't see who's around them or how long they've played.

Try tonight: one minute, eyes closed

Sit together with eyes closed for one minute. Then ask: "What did you hear? Where were you?" Open your eyes and name three things in the room. In our program, this is the lesson "Enough": noticing what's already here.
