What is Gorilla Tag?

Short answer: A VR game of tag where you play a gorilla.

Players move by swinging their real arms to run and climb, and play modes such as Infection, where one player tags the others. It came out in 2021, reached the Meta Quest store in 2022, and arrived on PlayStation VR2 in 2024. By June 2024 it had about 10 million users; GameSpot reported that most players are about 7 to 14.

Is Gorilla Tag safe for kids? The facts

Short answer: The game is rated for everyone, but the headset and the voice chat have age limits and risks.

  • Rating: ESRB E for Everyone, for mild fantasy violence, with players interacting and in-game purchases.
  • Headset age: Meta Quest allows parent-managed accounts for ages 10 to 12; most headset makers recommend 13 and up.
  • Voice chat: players talk with strangers. Android Central and Wikipedia report widespread slurs between players in voice chat; in March 2025 the developer added AI voice moderation with GGWP.
  • Age checks: the game uses k-ID age verification, and parents must consent before younger players get chat and some purchases.

Purchases and parental controls

Gorilla Tag is free on Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2 and $19.99 on Steam. Cosmetics cost Shiny Rocks, sold in bundles of about $5 to $40; players also earn 100 a day by logging in. On Meta Quest, parents can approve apps and purchases and limit voice chat and social features through a parent-managed account.

The habit kids may copy: shouting it out

Tag is loud, fast, and played with strangers' voices in your ears. Some kids bring the shouting and the trash talk out of the headset.

Try tonight: the real game

Play tag outside, the original way, and agree on one rule first: "Tagged means tagged. No arguing." In our program, this is the lesson "Fair Play": a game is fun only when it's fun for everyone.

What the research says

There's no research on Gorilla Tag and young children. A 2022 meta-analysis of 87 studies with about 159,000 children ages 12 and under found that more screen time was linked to slightly more behavior problems; the link was small and doesn't show cause and effect. More in screen time and child development.
