Is Roblox safe for kids? What Roblox actually is

Short answer: Roblox is rated T for Teen (ages 13 and up) in the US. The risks are content that varies by game, contact with other players, and purchases with real money. For ages 5 to 8, Roblox Kids accounts turn chat off and limit the game catalog.

Roblox isn't one game. It's a platform with millions of games made by other players and studios: obbies, pet games, role-play towns, racing, and much more. That's why answers to "is Roblox safe for kids" vary so much. A gentle obstacle course and a crowded hangout game are both "Roblox."

The ESRB rates Roblox T for Teen, with the descriptor "Diverse Content: Discretion Advised" and lists two interactive elements: Users Interact and In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items). In other words, the content and the people can vary, and some purchases are a gamble on what you get.

Roblox Kids: the account for ages 5–8

Since June 16, 2026, Roblox has offered age-based accounts worldwide. Roblox Kids is for ages 5 to 8, and it has the strictest default settings. According to Roblox, chat is off, and the catalog is limited to games with a Minimal or Mild maturity label (Roblox's own labels for its least mature games) that pass an extra review. Games with social hangouts or free-form drawing aren't included.

Chat stays off for everyone under 9 unless a parent turns on in-game text chat for a Roblox Kids account. Users who haven't completed an age check can't chat at all. Children move to Roblox Select accounts at 9.

Roblox doesn't offer an age-based account for 4-year-olds. Roblox Kids starts at 5.

How to make Roblox safe for kids: parental settings

1. Account and age check. A parent can create the account and complete the age check or parent verification, so the child is placed in Roblox Kids.

2. Linked parent account. Until a child turns 13, a linked parent can view their friend list, approve or decline Trusted Friend requests, block or report users, and set screen-time and spending limits.

3. Chat. It's off by default for Roblox Kids.

4. Spending limit. Parents can set a monthly spending limit, including zero. Robux cost real money, and some purchases are random.

5. Specific games. Parents can allow or block specific games until a child turns 16.

What Roblox games involve

Roblox includes obstacle courses (obbies) that involve repeated attempts, and building games that involve planning.

The habit kids may copy: want it, get it, now

Lots of skins and game passes cost Robux, so the gap between wanting something and getting it can be a few taps. Some kids start to expect everything right away, and the expectation can follow them into the store.

In our program, the lesson is called "I'm the boss of my want."

Try tonight: the wish list

When your child asks for Robux or a new item, say: "Great pick. Let's put it on the wish list and look again on Saturday."

Write it down where they can see it. On Saturday, look at the list together. Sometimes the want has faded. When it hasn't, you've taught something bigger than any item: waiting is a skill, and it grows with practice.

And one rule for online play: if anyone asks for Robux, a password, or a photo, "Come and tell me. No trouble for telling."

What the research says

There's no large study of Roblox and young children specifically. Research on screen time in general gives some context. A 2022 meta-analysis of 87 studies with about 159,000 children ages 12 and under found that more screen time was linked to slightly more behavior problems, such as aggression and anxiety; the link was small, and it doesn't show cause and effect. More in screen time and child development.

In US survey data from 2024, parents reported that about 1 in 5 children ages 6 to 11 spent four or more hours a day on screens on most weekdays, not counting schoolwork. For children ages 0 to 5, it was about 1 in 13. See how much screen time kids get.

The American Academy of Pediatrics' 2026 policy statement warns that media designed to maximize engagement can crowd out sleep and movement.

What else parents should know

Roblox has faced lawsuits from several US states, including Louisiana (August 2025), Kentucky (October 2025), and Texas (November 2025), over child safety. Roblox denies the allegations. It has also added new safety features, such as age-based accounts.
