Has NBA 2K been sued over loot boxes?

Short answer: Yes, by private plaintiffs, not by a government.

In January 2022, a minor and their guardian filed a class action in Winnebago County, Illinois, later moved to federal court. PC Gamer reported that it called the practices "unfair, deceptive, and unlawful" and said VC "distances the player psychologically" from the real money spent. Take-Two declined to comment. It concerned earlier editions, and we couldn't confirm the outcome. We found no government action against NBA 2K26 as of October 2026.

The habit kids may copy: coins that don't feel like money

The lawsuit's point is easy to see at any age: game coins don't feel like real money, so it's easy to spend without noticing.

Try tonight: real coins, real choice

Give your child three coins and a choice of two small things that cost one coin or three. Ask: "If you spend it all now, what's left for later?" In our program, this is the lesson "I'm the Boss of My Want": practicing the pause between wanting something and getting it.
