What Fortnite is

Fortnite is an online game by Epic Games. In its main mode, Battle Royale, up to 100 players drop onto an island and compete to be the last one standing. There's also a building mode and a large catalog of player-made experiences, plus other games inside Fortnite, such as racing and music games. According to the ESRB, the violence is cartoonish; the rating lists animated blood.

Fortnite age rating: what the ratings say

The ESRB (US and Canada) rates Fortnite Battle Royale T for Teen for violence, animated blood, and suggestive themes, with two interactive elements: Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. PEGI (Europe and the UK) rates it 12 for violence and in-game purchases. Germany's USK rates it 12 and also flags purchase incentives and pressure to keep playing.

Individual experiences inside Fortnite carry their own ratings. LEGO Fortnite, for example, is rated E10+ by the ESRB and 7 by PEGI.

The FTC settlement

In December 2022, the US Federal Trade Commission announced that Epic Games would pay $520 million in two settlements. A $275 million penalty was for violating COPPA, the children's privacy law. The FTC alleged that Epic collected personal information from children under 13 without parents' consent, and that real-time voice and text chat were on by default for children and teens. A separate $245 million went to refunds over what the FTC called dark patterns that led players into unwanted purchases. Epic neither admitted nor denied the allegations.

Fortnite parental controls

According to the ESRB's guide, players who say they're under 13 get a limited ("cabined") account: voice and text chat and real-money purchases are blocked until a parent consents. Players under 18 start with voice chat off.

Epic's parental controls let parents:

1. Limit chat to everyone, friends and teammates, friends only, or nobody.

2. Require a PIN for purchases and for friend requests.

3. Restrict experiences by rating.

4. Set play time limits and get weekly playtime reports.

The habit kids may copy: lose, then melt down

Most Fortnite matches end in a loss: one winner, many players out. For some kids, a loss means a meltdown.

What the research says

There's no large study of this game and young children specifically. Research on screen time in general gives some context. A 2022 meta-analysis of 87 studies with about 159,000 children ages 12 and under found that more screen time was linked to slightly more behavior problems, such as aggression and anxiety; the link was small, and it doesn't show cause and effect. More in screen time and child development.

In US survey data from 2024, parents reported that about 1 in 5 children ages 6 to 11 spent four or more hours a day on screens on most weekdays, not counting schoolwork. See how much screen time kids get.
