What is Overcooked?

Overcooked is a series of co-op cooking games by Ghost Town Games and Team17. Up to four players chop, cook, and serve orders against the clock in kitchens that move, such as a hot-air balloon or a swaying ship. Overcooked! 2 came out on Switch in August 2018. Overcooked! All You Can Eat (2020) combines Overcooked!, Overcooked! 2, and all their extra content, and adds new levels, new chefs, and an assist mode with slower recipe timers and the option to skip levels.

Overcooked age rating: what's in it

Short answer: Both games are rated E in the US and 3 in Europe.

  • US & Canada (ESRB): E. No descriptors for Overcooked! 2; Mild Cartoon Violence for All You Can Eat.
  • Europe & UK (PEGI): 3 for both.
  • Common Sense Media: 8+ for Overcooked! 2.

The ESRB says players in All You Can Eat can be hit by cars and briefly incapacitated, and fireballs can briefly knock them out. PEGI notes that in Overcooked! 2 players fend off zombie bread with glowing red eyes, and the intro has thunder and lightning that "can be scary to some children."

Online play and paid DLC

Short answer: Both games have online play, and Overcooked! 2 sells extra levels separately.

The ESRB lists "Users Interact" for both games. On Nintendo Switch, Overcooked! 2 supports online play for 2–4 players with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo's US store sells four Overcooked! 2 add-ons from $2.99 to $9.99, such as Surf 'n' Turf and Night of the Hangry Horde. The ESRB doesn't list in-game purchases for either game. All You Can Eat already includes the extra content.

The habit kids may copy: the shouted order

The clock keeps running, so players call out orders fast. When a dish burns, someone usually gets the blame.

Try tonight: a two-chef snack

Make a simple snack together, one job each. When something spills or breaks, say: "Oops. What's our Plan B?" Then try another way together. In our program, this is the lesson "Plan B": if one way doesn't work, try another.
