What is Peacock?

Short answer: NBCUniversal's streaming service, with TV shows, movies, sports, and live channels.

The library runs from preschool shows to titles rated TV-MA and R, so what a child sees depends on the profile. The App Store lists no messaging or chat.

Peacock parental controls: what's in it

Short answer: Kids profiles, rating levels, and a Profile PIN, according to Plugged In's 2024 guide; we couldn't open Peacock's own help pages.

  • Kids profile: Plugged In says it's chosen when the profile is created and can't be changed later, with levels Little Kids (TV-Y), Older Kids (TV-Y7, TV-G, G), or Family (TV-PG, PG).
  • Other profiles: Plugged In lists Family, Teen (TV-14, PG-13), or Adult (TV-MA, R, NC-17).
  • Profile PIN: Plugged In says a four-digit code stops others from opening a profile.
  • Password: Plugged In says changing a rating needs the account password, but creating or deleting a profile doesn't.

Is Peacock safe for kids? The ratings

Short answer: The app is rated 13+ on Apple's App Store and Teen on Google Play.

Apple lists realistic and cartoon violence, horror, profanity, mature themes, drug references, sexual content, and weapons. Apple says some content may be rated higher and is managed through in-app controls. In the App Store, Select costs $8.99, Premium $12.99, and Premium Plus $19.99 a month; bundles with Apple TV go up to $22.99. We found no lawsuit, fine, or warning against Peacock.

The habit kids may copy: scrolling for the next thing

Rows of shows keep going as long as you scroll. Picking one, and staying with it, is a separate skill.

Try tonight: two choices, not twenty

Pick two shows you're happy with and hold up two fingers. Ask: "This one or that one?" Your child chooses, and the choice stays for tonight. In our program, this is the lesson "Two Roads": noticing that there's a choice.
