Roblox parental controls: how to set them up

Roblox parental controls live in Settings > Parental Controls, and they only work after your child sends an Add parent request and you link your own verified account. The two settings to check first are content maturity (under Content restrictions) and chat (under Communication). Children ages 5–8 get a Roblox Kids account in most regions, where chat starts off and only games rated Minimal or Mild are available. From your linked account you can also set a monthly spending limit, a daily screen time limit, and review your child's connections.

Help your child handle big feelings. A 12-week program for kids 5–6: 20 minutes, twice a week.

How to link a parent account to your child's Roblox account

Short answer: Your child sends a link request from their own settings, then you verify your age and select Agree.

  1. On your child's account, open Settings (on desktop, the gear icon at the top right; on mobile, More at the bottom right, then Settings).
  2. Go to Parental Controls and select Add parent.
  3. Enter the email address for your own Roblox account (or the address where you want to create one).
  4. Open the email from your child's Roblox account and select use existing account, or create a new account.
  5. Follow the onscreen steps to verify your age with a government-issued ID or credit card.
  6. Select Agree to link to your child's account.

How to set content maturity and block a game

Short answer: Use the Content maturity slider, and block any single game you don't want, whatever its rating.

  1. In your own account, go to Settings > Parental Controls and select your child's account.
  2. Scroll to Settings you manage and select Content restrictions.
  3. Select Content maturity and move the slider to the level you're comfortable with. A short description of each level appears below it.
  4. To block one game, go back to Content restrictions, select Blocked games, select the + icon, type the game's name, then select Block and confirm.

Roblox Kids accounts show only games rated Minimal or Mild. You can allow a game your child requests through pending requests, but only if it's rated Moderate or below.

How to turn chat on or off on Roblox

Short answer: Chat is off by default in Roblox Kids accounts; you decide whether to turn on in-game chat and one-on-one chat.

  1. Go to Settings > Parental Controls.
  2. Scroll to Settings you manage and select Communication.
  3. Select Experience chat (in-game chat) and choose whether it's on or off.
  4. Choose whether Direct chat (one-on-one chat in games) is on or off.
  5. If your child is under 13 and asks to add a trusted friend, approve the request in your email or in Parental Controls within 24 hours.

Every user must complete an age check to use chat. If a parent turns chat on for a child age 5–8, the child can chat with users under 13 and trusted friends.

How to set Roblox spending limits and screen time limits

Short answer: Set a Monthly spending limit under Spending restrictions, and set a daily screen time limit from the same parental controls.

  1. Go to Settings > Parental Controls.
  2. Go to Settings You Manage and select Spending restrictions.
  3. Set a Monthly spending limit. It resets at the end of each calendar month and doesn't roll over.
  4. Choose spending notifications: all transactions, high spend alerts, or none.
  5. In the same parental controls, set a daily screen time limit. When your child reaches it, they see a message and can't use Roblox for the rest of the day.

Daily screen time limits are available for all Roblox Kids accounts and for ages 9–12 in Roblox Select accounts.

How to see and remove your child's Roblox connections

Short answer: Open Connections in parental controls to see who your child is connected with and block anyone you don't know.

  1. Go to Settings > Parental Controls.
  2. Scroll down to Connections and select Manage.
  3. Select an avatar to see that user's profile.
  4. To remove someone, select the three-dot menu next to their username, then Block and confirm. To file a complaint, select Report.

What these settings can't do

  • Gift cards aren't capped. Roblox says the monthly spending limit doesn't affect gift card redemption.
  • Blocked games still show up. A blocked game still appears in search results, and if your child is playing it when you block it, the block takes effect the next time they enter the game.
  • Chat built by game creators isn't covered. The Experience chat and Direct chat settings don't apply to chat features that creators built into their own games.
  • Unlinking removes your controls. If you unlink your account, you can no longer give permissions or set screen time and spending limits.

What the settings can't teach, and what your child can learn

Settings are a fence, not a skill: they limit what reaches your child, but they don't teach what to do when a game ends or a friend asks for Robux. In our program, 5- and 6-year-olds practice the skills these moments call for:

  • "The Pause Button" (stop, breathe, choose) for the moment the daily time limit appears mid-game.
  • "I'm the Boss of My Want" (practicing the pause between wanting something and getting it) for the shiny item in the Avatar Shop.
  • "The Wave" (big feelings rise, peak, and pass) for losing a round or being left out of a server.

In our program, these are practiced offline, in 20-minute sessions twice a week, before kids need them online.
