What does PG mean?
Short answer: Parental guidance suggested: some material may not be suitable for children.
PG is the second of five US movie ratings: G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17. G means "all ages admitted" and generally no violence; PG allows mild violence, some language, and scary moments.
What age is PG?
Short answer: There's no age limit. Anyone can see a PG movie in a theater. The MPA's wording is a suggestion for parents to check the content.
Why a PG movie can still scare young kids
A PG movie can still scare young kids because PG covers a wide range, from gentle comedies to films with scary scenes. In our parent guides, PG movies include KPop Demon Hunters, Zootopia 2, and Coraline, a dark, creepy-toned film that Common Sense Media lists for 9 and up. The reasons after the rating, such as "scary images" or "thematic elements," show where the difference is.
Who decides, and is it the law?
CARA, the Motion Picture Association's rating board, decides, and no, it isn't a law: the system is voluntary. According to the MPA, the raters are all current parents, and new raters must have a child between 5 and 15. Independent filmmakers don't have to submit their films, and most US theaters, as members of the trade group Cinema United, enforce the ratings at their box offices.
PG in the UK
The UK's BBFC also has a PG rating. It says PG films are suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for more sensitive children. The same film can get PG in one country and a higher rating in another: Wicked: For Good is PG in the US and the UK, but 12 in Germany.
