What does PG-13 mean?
Short answer: Parents strongly cautioned: some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
PG-13 sits between PG and R in the US movie ratings: G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17. According to the MPA, a film's theme by itself won't push it above PG-13, though depictions of activities tied to a mature theme can earn an R.
What age is PG-13?
Short answer: There's no age limit. The 13 is guidance for parents, not a rule at the box office. A 10-year-old can buy a ticket; whether to watch is the parent's decision.
What the reasons after PG-13 mean
Every PG-13 rating includes descriptors explaining why, such as "PG-13 for strong violent content, bloody images and language." According to the MPA, the wording is unique to each film. Reading the reason tells parents whether the issue is language, violence, scary images, or something else.
Who decides, and is it the law?
CARA, the Motion Picture Association's rating board, decides, and no, it isn't a law: the system is voluntary. According to the MPA, the raters are all current parents, and new raters must have a child between 5 and 15. Independent filmmakers don't have to submit their films, and most US theaters, as members of the trade group Cinema United, enforce the ratings at their box offices.
PG-13 in other countries
Other countries rate films separately. A US PG-13 film may be 12A, 15, or even PG in the UK, and 12 or 16 in Germany. For example, the Five Nights at Freddy's films are PG-13 in the US and 15 in the UK.
