What Among Us is
Among Us is an online party game by Innersloth. Players are crewmates on a spaceship doing simple tasks, but one or more are secretly impostors who sabotage the ship and "eliminate" crewmates. When a body is found, everyone meets, argues, and votes on who to throw off the ship. "Sus," short for suspicious, comes from those meetings.
Among Us age rating: what the ratings say
The ESRB (US and Canada) rates Among Us E10+ (Everyone 10+) for fantasy violence and mild blood, with two interactive elements: Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. PEGI (Europe and the UK) rates it 7 for violence and in-game purchases; Germany's USK rates it 6; Apple's App Store lists 9+. The eliminations are short cartoon animations.
Is Among Us safe for kids? Chat and accounts
Short answer: Among Us is rated E10+ (everyone 10 and older) in the US, 7 by PEGI in Europe, and 6 by USK in Germany. The main risk is contact with strangers in public games. For players under 13, open chat is off: only preset Quick Chat phrases work until a parent allows more.
According to Innersloth, players under the age of digital consent, 13 in most countries, can only use Quick Chat, a set of preset phrases, unless a parent gives permission for free chat. A custom display name also needs a parent's permission. Players without an account, in guest mode, are limited to Quick Chat with a random name.
Parents give permissions through Innersloth's Parent Portal. Public lobbies include strangers; private games limit play to people you invite.
The habit kids may copy: blame first, proof later
Among Us is a voting game: you accuse, you argue, you vote someone out. Some kids bring it home: "You're sus!" about a missing cookie, before anyone knows what happened.
Try tonight: "Did you see it?"
When someone gets blamed, ask one question: "Did you see it, or are you guessing?" Fair means facts first. In our program, this is the lesson "True or made up": checking a thought against the facts.
What the research says
There's no large study of this game and young children specifically. Research on screen time in general gives some context. A 2022 meta-analysis of 87 studies with about 159,000 children ages 12 and under found that more screen time was linked to slightly more behavior problems, such as aggression and anxiety; the link was small, and it doesn't show cause and effect. More in screen time and child development.
In US survey data from 2024, parents reported that about 1 in 5 children ages 6 to 11 spent four or more hours a day on screens on most weekdays, not counting schoolwork. See how much screen time kids get.
