What is Geometry Dash?

Short answer: A one-tap rhythm game in which a little square jumps and flies through levels set to music.

The levels scroll on their own; the player taps to jump over spikes and saws. It was made by Swedish solo developer Robert Topała (RobTop Games) and came out in August 2013 on iOS and Android, then on Steam in December 2014. Players can build levels in an editor and share them online. Free spin-offs include Geometry Dash Lite, Meltdown, World, and SubZero.

Geometry Dash age rating: what's in it

Short answer: The labels differ by store and version.

  • App Store (paid game): 13+, with messaging and chat, user-generated content, and social media listed.
  • App Store (Lite, World, SubZero): 4+, with ads, messaging and chat, and user-generated content.
  • Google Play (paid and Lite): Everyone 10+, Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Users Interact; Lite adds In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items).
  • Common Sense Media: 8+.

Common Sense Media says the player "dies" by landing on spikes or buzz saws, with no blood, and restarts at the beginning of the level. It describes a steep learning curve and lots of frustration.

Online levels, chat, and purchases

Players upload their own levels, and others can play and comment on them, according to Wikipedia. The App Store lists messaging and chat; we couldn't confirm which chat or comment controls the game has. Some kid reviewers on Common Sense Media mention creepy user-made levels and a toxic community; those are children's comments, not the editors' review.

The full game costs $3.99 on phones and $4.99 on Steam. The free versions show ads. Google Play says Lite has in-game purchases that include random items; we couldn't confirm what they are. We found no government action involving the game.

Why young kids know Geometry Dash

It's one of the biggest mobile games: the free Lite and the paid game together passed 1 billion mobile downloads, according to Wikipedia, and Lite alone shows 500 million+ downloads on Google Play. We found no data on how many young children play it.

The habit kids may copy: crash, restart, crash

Every crash sends the player back to the start of the level. Common Sense Media calls the game "utterly frustrating."

Try tonight: one word for "I can't"

Pick something a little hard, like a tower of 10 blocks. Each time it falls, say it together: "Not yet!" Then try again, and count the tries. In our program, this is the lesson "Not Yet": the trying matters.
