What Naruto is about

Naruto is a Japanese anime based on Masashi Kishimoto's manga. Naruto Uzumaki is an orphaned young ninja whom his village avoids, because the spirit of a demon fox is sealed inside him. He trains hard and dreams of becoming Hokage, the village leader. The first series ran from 2002 to 2007 (220 episodes). Naruto Shippuden follows him as a teen and ran from 2007 to 2017.

Naruto vs. Naruto Shippuden rating

Short answer: Common Sense Media lists Shippuden as TV-14 and the original as TV-PG, and rates Shippuden's violence "a lot" versus "some" for the original; it lists both for 11+.

For Shippuden, Common Sense Media rates violence "a lot": fights with blades, projectiles, and bombs that show light to moderate blood, brief scenes of mass graves, and mentions of family members who died by suicide. Language adds infrequent "hell," "damn," and "bastard." In Germany, Disney+ shows its own label of 16 for the original Naruto and 12 for Shippuden.

Why young kids know Naruto

Naruto is a large franchise. Common Sense Media notes plenty of tie-in merchandise, and Bandai Namco reported in 2025 that Naruto video games had sold more than 37 million units. The manga has 250 million copies in circulation, and there are card and board games, too.

The habit kids may copy: put-downs

Common Sense Media notes there's no swearing in the original series, but characters call each other "loser," "idiot," and "fatty."

Try tonight: not yet

Naruto trains again and again. Pick one hard thing, like a button or a cartwheel. When it doesn't work, say together: "Not yet. I'm still practicing." In our program, this is the lesson "Not Yet": the trying matters.
