What is Zenless Zone Zero?

Short answer: A free action role-playing game by HoYoverse, set in a city after a supernatural disaster.

Players act as a "Proxy" who guides agents through dangerous zones called Hollows and fights monsters and human enemies in fast combat. It came out in 2024 on phones and PC, and later on PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Apple lists messaging and chat.

Zenless Zone Zero age rating: what's in it

Short answer: It's rated for teens in the US and for 16 and up in Europe.

  • US & Canada (ESRB): T. The ESRB describes fights with swords, pistols, and rifles; small bloodstains in still images; female characters with exaggerated proportions and camera angles on their bodies; and a few strong words.
  • Europe & UK (PEGI): 16. PEGI says that after its rating criteria changed in June 2026, games with loot boxes or other paid random items get PEGI 16 by default. PEGI also notes sexual posturing and references to self-harm, implied rather than shown.
  • App Store: 13+. Google Play: Teen.

How Signal Search works: paid random draws

Short answer: Signal Search is the game's random draw for characters and weapons (W-Engines), and its currency can be bought with real money.

On the App Store, Monochrome, the paid currency, costs $4.99 for 300 up to $99.99 for 6,480. Guides such as Icy Veins and Prydwen say each search uses one Master Tape, which costs 160 Polychrome. Apple's listing says the game "includes optional in-game purchases, including random virtual items," and the ESRB labels it "In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)."

The habit kids may copy: luck decides

In a random draw, the result isn't up to the player. Kids may start to talk about luck as if it were a skill.

Try tonight: is it up to me?

Roll a die together five times. Before each roll, ask: "Is the number up to you?" Then ask: "What is up to you?" (how you roll, how you react). In our program, this is the lesson "Two Baskets": what's up to me, and what isn't.

Who makes it: HoYoverse. See what its other titles teach in the Kids' Media Publisher Index.
